First Blush: Farmers on Strike

Travelling solo I was on my first visit to Lyon, on my way from exploring Germany, Czech Republic, and Austria with classmates, we parted ways in Innsbruck.  They went south to Italy while I headed east on my way to Andrézieux-Bouthéon.  No, it's not a hidden gem of the hexagon, but a childhood friend was living there at the time.  Getting there required travel on three different trains, with a night's stay in Lyon.  Having already been admonished by my matronly server in Innsbruck at dinner the night before for travelling alone....

In the spring of 2007, I was one of 30 teachers nationally to be accepted to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities program for Teachers of French organized by faculty at the University of Iowa.  In the weeks that proceeded the program, I planned a countryside stay in the Vaucluse, which included visits to Gourdes, Rousillon, Ile sur la Sorge and Avignon.  Venasque....
